Scotty, my parents have a '13 Toyota RAV4, 4 cylinder, 60k miles. I noticed, on several occasions, that the vehicle makes a loud humming noise while parked. The noise lasts a few minutes then goes away. This happens when the vehicle is cold - has been sitting in the garage all day not having been driven, with the doors locked and the keys not in the ignition.
The noise is similar to what you would hear when a fuel pump initiates just before you start an engine, except quite a bit louder.
What in the world could be the source of this peculiar noise?

If I’m not mistaken, this may be normal.
It’s the EVAP system running a diagnostic check. Toyota products are renowned for it.
Check the owner’s manual for literature on this subject.
