I've got a 2013 Toyota Venza, with the 2.7L 4 cylinder, and it has 123,000 miles on it. This evening I noticed the low oil pressure light come on briefly a couple times when at a stop, and I noticed my oil level was very low when I got home. It's not leaking on the driveway, so I assume it's probably burning it. What can cause that? I don't think this is one of the Toyota engines that had problems with the piston rings. Engine runs fine, although I have noticed a bit of noise/rattling(?) lately when accelerating, particularly in turns, if that has anything to do with it. Thanks!
If it has oily soot in spark plug or tailpipe most likely your engine is burning oil. If the engine is burning oil try to replace the PCV valve and pray if that fixes.
How many miles has it been since you changed the oil, and you know it was topped up?
Most cars burn some oil, but it is usually not enough to notice between oil changes.
If you are going a long way between oil change intervals, like 8-10k miles, that could cause more wear, and make manifest the oil burning that you may otherwise not notice at a 5k mile interval.
Now just figure out how much it is burning.
I assume it's probably burning it.
Don't assume anything. Look for evidence of oil burning and check for oil leaks.
What can cause that?
If it is burning oil that's caused by engine wear.
