[Solved] Should I get rid of my Ecoboost F-150

Scotty,  We have a 2016 F-150 with the EcoBoost Twin Turbo engine.  You have said many times to stay away from that engine. We now have 98,000 miles and are wondering if we should get rid of this truck before we have problems.  Have read that the turbos go "out" from 100,000 to 125,000 miles.  Went to the local Ford shop and they stated they have had only one problem with that engine.  They also stated that there was a modification to the turbos between 2014 and 2015...and that 2011-2014 might be more trouble.  Your thoughts on this?  Keep it....or move it on?  Been using full synthetic on the oil changes.

Yes this was 1st (awful) generation of "Ecoboom" engines.

The problem with these direct injected engines is carbon buildup and stress from the turbos.

You mean Ford dealership? Did you expect them to tell you the truth when their bills are paid by your truck breaking?

@mmj

Thanks for the response.
It's the 3.5L
Were there any changes that you know of between '14 and '15?
We always expect a skewed truth, but figured there might be some balancing by the fact that they could use more vehicles to sell

Your verdict? Pre-emptive fix, sell or wait for a problem?

FYI there were at least two F-150 recalls in that year.

  • 1.3 million vehicles recalled: " door latches that can freeze in cold climates, causing the door to not open or close properly"
  • 2 million vehicles: " front seatbelt pre-tensioners can generate excessive sparks and possibly cause a fire in the event of a collision"
