2016 Honda Fit 5 DR HB LX CVT
Hi Scotty,
I have a Honda Fit with 81000 miles. Should I sell it now and buy something else or just keep it till it dies? Do you know how long it can last if it is well maintained?
Yvonne
Forever.
Seriously? Sounds like I should keep it. Thank you!!!
I doubt this, the new ones have DCTs or CVTs and you never know when it’ll fail. It’s not like the old ones with conventional autos.
The key to longevity is lubrication, especially the engine, transmission and drivetrain. Most people are OK on engine oil and filter but completely neglect the transmission (fluid and filter) and greaseable fittings on driveshafts, suspension and steering components and oil changes in differentials until it's too late.
I'm the only owner and I have taken it to the dealer for service as recommended by Honda. The transmission fluid and oil have been changed regularly. I will need to check if the driveshafts and oil changes in the differentials has been done. How often does that need to be done?
I do mine at 50,000 miles, or whenever you do a trans fluid filter change, about 50,000.
I will make sure and do that. Someone told me to dump the car before 100000, but the price of used cars right now is through the roof. I started wondering if the Honda I already own might be worth keeping. Your help is much appreciated.
Tell "someone" to go pound sand.
Was that ‘someone’ a car salesman?
It was. They offered me 11000 for it.
Someone told me to dump the car before 100000
That was just bad advice. It has more life than that with good maintenance.
I will need to check if the driveshafts and oil changes in the differentials has been done.
Does yours have the AWD system?
No, It's a FWD.
In that case just change the CVT fluid every 30,000 miles, religiously. 81,000 miles is relatively low mileage for a Honda Fit. Especially one that’s well maintained. Your vehicle doesn’t have a differential.
Thank you for letting me know.
No worries. Look up the maintenance section of your owner’s manual to check for any other maintenance items which may be due at the present age/mileage. For eg. valve adjustment, brake fluid replacement, etc.
As long as you drive conservatively, (Warm up the car) change your oil frequently, and do the proper maintenance...You can get 400,000 miles or so. Rembert that on Honda's, you might have to have the valves adjusted every 100,000 miles since their valves are not self-adjustable like Toyota's. Also don't be surprised if every 5 or 6 years, your AC Compressor goes out. Honda's AC Compressors don't usually last long.
Thanks for the head's up!
