Advice for recently purchased GMC Terrain

Hey Scotty!

I have a 2017 GMC Terrain. Bought it brand new. Only 13,000 miles on it so far (I was military and deployed a lot after I bought it). How long do you think it will last? I’ve been keeping up with regular maintenance. What issues can I expect?

Clarification: Which engine do you have in yours?

GM products have taken a severe reliability hit lately. Those 2.4 Ecotecs, some have oil consumption issues so check oil levels frequently.

Regardless of what dealer says or your owners manual up the frequency of your oil changes. About 3-4k miles. And the transmission should last as long as you change the fluid and filter every 30-40k miles.

That year is a lot better than the early models.  And the engine will likely outlast the newer turbo models.

Who knows?  You might have hit a sweet spot on quality.

Do take the advice on early oil changes though.  That will seriously reduce the risk of premature oil burning.

See below for some issues other owners have reported:  the early years had more issues but yours is the last model year (2017) of that generation so, in theory, it should be more refined/ironed out, but with GM there’s no guarantees (especially when it comes to random electrical issues as it ages).  If you intend to keep well past 100,000+ miles, and while you may get fortunate here, I wouldn’t have gotten it.  Nevertheless, change the engine oil no more than every 5,000 miles:  check at 3,000 and 4,000 miles - if it’s already dirty then you’ll have to change sooner than 5,000 miles.  Also, change the transmission fluid (drain and fill with filter change) every 40,000 miles.  Stay on top of the rest of the maintenance (per owners manual), baby the vehicle (don’t drive it hard), don’t tow much with the vehicle (certainly don’t approach its towing limits), and pray a little.

Biggest mistake ever ...if possible return the car and get your money back

Those are pure Italian endless money pit

They have :

Engine failure

Transmission problem

Poor airbag

Excessive oil consumption

Engine stall and shutdown when driving

Electronic failure

If your stuck with it BABY and perform regular maintenance as much as u can but as soon as it start given MAJOR problems like transmission replacement or engine falling apart get rid of it

Maintenance u can do to get most out of it:

Don't take it offroad

Don't drive fast

Use full synthetic oils after every 6 months or 5000miles

Change coolant

Change transmission fluid

Don't use cheap gas and use the one recommended by dealer because they have additive in it to remove carbon deposits from Engine which can increase the life span of Engine a little bit more

And mostly pray.....

Italian?

Too much wine, I tell ya @mountainmanjoe

Fiat Chrysler
Mostly Italian then American

I know Fiat is Italian. This guy is driving a GMC Terrain. Do you know what the 'GM' represents?

Yea I think he is confoooosing GM and Chrysler. And those things are way past the GM/Opel years to. If it was a Jeep Renegade he would be on the ball. 🤣 I haven’t heard many electrical issues in the Terrain/Equinox models, just timing chain breaks from poor oil maintenance, oil consumption, and trannys giving out if fluid isn’t kept clean and babied.
