My friend has a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu it only runs on the jump box or jumper cables it has a new battery and alternator

Check the wiring to the alternator. The alternator supplies power to the vehicle when it is running. Its also possible the replacement alternator you received is faulty. If you have a multimeter test the alternator or bring it to an auto parts store and have them test it for free. Is the car still under warranty?

Get the battery and alternator tested at an auto parts store, it could be that the battery was bad from the factory and it just isn't holding charge as it seems. Does it stay on after?

Load test the battery to make sure it is healthy.
