Thoughts on 2018 Silverado K1500 4.3L w/ 6 speed

Hey I’m looking at a 2018 Silverado with the 4.3 and 6 speed auto with 60000kms on it. Basic 4x4 that was made in the U.S. I was thinking about trading in my 2016 Hyundai Sonata for it. It’s a nice looking truck but I’ve heard bad things about the tranny. I know every vehicle has problems but I know some people that love theirs. Just wondering your thoughts! Cheers

I think that could be a decent truck, for the right price (do they really still use the 'K' naming?).

The 4.3 should be dependable, and it's been modernized to be more fuel efficient. I haven't heard of any problems with the 6-speed. Just realize that with GM you get pretty shoddy 'fit & finish'. If you don't mind that because it's a work or bush truck, then give it a chance. The V6 should offer plenty of working room under the hood if you're a DIY'er. Just don't expect to haul yachts and trailers with it.

It's leaps and bounds better than a Sonata.

That 4.3L V6 engine uses cylinder deactivation.

@daywalker did the V6 inherit lifter issues too?

Some of them inherited the cylinder deactivation (AFM) issues like oil consumption and AFM lifters failing. I wouldn’t want to chance it on any GM engine with AFM.

"So, is the GM 4.3 V6 EcoTec3 a reliable engine? The short answer is yes. Some minor issues may happen with long-term ownership, especially as cars age and mileage builds up. But let's be honest, this can be said about any engine. Correct maintenance is the key to long-term engine reliability. With good care, the 4.3 EcoTec3 engines last up more than 250,000 miles. "

that's probably fine for most people

Well, the GM cylinder deactivation system is still like a game of Russian Roulette: some owners might be fine and have no issues, but others would run into trouble (and that’s possibly a whole new engine).  Good maintenance and turning off the system help improve one’s odds, but it comes down to how much risk the OP wants to take on.  The system is a liability.
.
I am also not fond of potential GM electrical gremlins over time.

I didn't like the throttle lag on the 4.3L V6, so I went with a 5.3L V6 Silverado back in '17/'18. Engine and transmission was good, never had an issue.
