Scotty,

I got a 2019 Mazda CX9 with 65,000 miles on it. The transmission needed to be replace. It’s still under warranty, but it’s going to be a few months before they get it replace, because it’s on backorder. I was hoping that these 6 speed transmission from Mazda would be good. I guess this will be my first and last Mazda.

They're good on the Mazda3.

A bit of a stretch for the Mazda6

And way too much for the Mazda CX-9.

You're welcome to look on this forum and find failed Honda CVTs at very low millage (from this week: failed at 25k),

Toyota conventional automatics failing at 100k (I remember at least 2 Camrys having that issue, you can browse the form and see)

As much as I'm not a fan of the CX-9 -

It's a 4.5 thousand pound curb weight vehicle that's pulled by a janky 4 cylinder from a subcompact...

and like all cars of this class, it's not built to be repaired:

As much as this car is "meh", major component failures at low mileages are not related to it being a Mazda - It's just how a lot of these "state of the art" cars are.

Was thinking about trading it in for a 2023 Honda Pilot Elite. What do you think about the Mazda CX-90? The CX-90 has a 6 cylinder and I believe a 8 speed transmission.

There is no good information about the long term reliability of the new Honda Pilot nor the 10 speed.
Same goes for the Mazda CX-90, no useful information, and obsoletely nothing I can say about the engine - except that I wouldn't trust it.

The CX-9 is fine, I wouldn't bother - I know it feels like the "car betrayed your trust" but it's nothing special, just look at the other cars in the segment:

And you can really find many many MANY more, although on average this is the longest lasting one.

All of these are ultra complex luxurious computerized vehicles...
These ain't no 2015 Highlander where the most advanced feature was HD Bluetooth and what is essentially a webcam connected to a PCB that would beep if you crossed a lane marking without showing the turn signal.

So eh, with new car quality being as bad as it is, (still so much better than modern GM where jerking and a tranny failure at 60k isn't the exception, it's the norm), I'd just stick to what you already have, it's decent.

I see, yes I guess new vehicles aren’t built the same as they used to or are as reliable. Especially when now they are using smaller engines with turbos. Maybe I should just suffer the gas mileage and go find myself a Toyota 4Runner. At least for what I heard, they are still built the same.

Yea it sounds like a good idea, in the last few days there was a Toyota Tacoma 4 cylinder fail
(3,700 miles)
https://carkiller.com/scottykilmer/qa/engine-knocking-in-23-tacoma-2-7l/
and a Subaru engine completely failing at 40k miles and Subaru not honoring their warranty (due to a lack of oil change receipts)

So yeah, a 4Runner sounds like a great idea.

So I just got my 2019 Mazda CX-9 back like 2-3 days ago and now I have a whoosh air sound every time that I step on the gas. Any idea of what can be the cause or anything that has to do with the transmission change? In the meantime I scheduled an appointment for it.

depending on what woosh sound, as I understand it, it seems to be related vacuum lines. (for example a boost leak can cause sounds)
replacing a tranny on a car can require a lot of disassembly on unrelated things, improper reassembly can result in sounds.
But it can be also something totally unrelated, it’s hard to guess.

Whoa.  How long is your warranty? Mileage? Years?

150,000 miles powertrain warranty.

Nice.
