93 Corolla Wagon EX 1.8L Crank no start w/ fuel, spark and good compression

Hi Scotty!

I want to thank you for helping diagnose my car problems, as I am a subscriber to your youtube channel.

I have a 93 Corolla Wagon EX 1.8L Made in Japan. with 320,000 miles.

I have a crank no start situation, I am getting spark. I used starting fluid and Still not even a sputter. Checked compression which was 120 psi, 105psi, 120psi, 105 psi, which appears ok. I should mention that the car ran fine the night before and in the morning when I tried to start the car, no go.

I put on the following new parts:

Spark Plugs, wires, cap and rotor, ignition coil, air filter. still no start.

I talked to several mechanics which didn't seem to have a clue.

I am at a complete loss and any help would be a god send.

Regards,

Joshua Goldstein

The piston is at top dead center, all 4 valves are closed. Camshaft timing pointer is at 12 o'clock. Crankshaft pointer is at ZERO. Distributer rotor is pointing to #1. It is still crank no start. I am getting good spark, good compression, used starter fluid. New plugs, wires, ignition coil, cap, rotor. Injectors are all functioning with plenty of gas pressure.

Check your timing procedure.

Shouldn't the notch on the Crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer)  be at 10° BTDC when the Camshaft pulley mark is at 12 o'clock and the Distributor Rotor is pointing to the #1 plug wire?

Spark, fuel and compression is all you need to start a car. If you have these then the next step is pulling the timing cover and making sure your in time. Although the 105 psi on 2 cyl is kinda of low as well is still relatively close to the other 2. I would first checking timing.

If it is getting compression and spark, you should at the least get sputters.  I once encountered a tractor with replaced plugs and wires, but with the wires connected to the wrong cylinders - it was getting spark, but at the wrong time for combustion.

That's what I was thinking about the lack of sputtering.

If anyone else has any other suggestions it would be appreciated. 😀

hooked up a timing light and you both were right. tried to advance/retard distributor, no luck. popped off the valve cover and and the top plastic timing shield. Timing belt is at 80%, lucky me.. Though I am curious how a good timing belt, properly tensioned could jump a tooth.

I removed the valve cover and belt cover. Still no luck. The piston is at top dead center, all 4 valves are closed. Camshaft timing pointer is at 12 o'clock. Crankshaft pointer is at ZERO. Distributor rotor is pointing to #1. It is still crank no start. I am getting good spark, good compression, used starter fluid. New plugs, wires, ignition coil, cap, rotor. Injectors are all functioning with plenty of gas pressure. HELP!!!

I am at a crank no start situation. i replaced the ignition coil, cap, rotor, plugs and wires. I Checked for spark. I checked the compression 120/105/120/105. I used ether and it turned and not even a sputter. I checked the injectors are firing and they are.

Then I checked the timing with a timing light. It appeared out of time. So I cracked the valve cover and timing cover..

I was thinking Crankshaft position Sensor, but there wouldn't be Injector function or spark.

I am at a loss. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @joshua11 . Please don't start a new Topic Thread for the same problem
.
I realize that somebody marked this original thread Topic Title as "problem Solved"
.
I've removed that from the Topic Header and moved your new post into this thread so we can continue to discuss your Corolla here
