I need to change the transmission fluid on this 5MT. I know the "correct" answer is "Honda genuine MTF" and be done with it. But it's hard, if not impossible, to find it where I live. I've also asked for GM/AcDelco's variant, which they also don't have. I looked around all the brands in our biggest oil shop without luck.
Considering the situation, would a 75w90 gear oil be considered a substitute or will that trash my transmission? Those we have a bunch here. It's only got 105k km so it's still practically new, I wouldn't wanna mess it up. OTOH, I have no clue what's in there now. The temperature here varies from 5°C (41°F) in the winter to 45°C (113°F) in the summer, if that makes any difference regarding viscosity.
Is MTF just gear oil with some special additive?
Couldn't you but the Honda MTF thru amazon ?
It would cost anywhere from $30-50 per liter to ship here. I doubt this transmission is so weak that it will only work with HG MTF. From what I've read, a 75w90 gear oil is like a 10w40 motor oil.
What does your local Honda dealer have to say about sourcing the fluid?
My "local" dealer is 450km away lol
Ouch. I sincerely hope this helps you -

What about Ravenol 75W80 MTF-2? From what I read it's in the same viscosity index and is about the only thing I could find around here. The website even lists it as a replacement for Honda MTF. I guess I got lucky.
Doesn't your owners manual specify for different climates? It should...
It says to use 10w30 or 10w40, which is the old recommendation. I checked the fluid today, there's definitely normal gear oil in there.
