A Good Station Vagon

Hello Scotty,

Can you advise a good station wagon car for me? unfortunately there are no full station wagons on Toyota and Honda lines.

The closest thing is Toyota Matrix but I need something with a larger cargo room at the back. I don't want to go with minivans because they are too high for my garage door when I load a ladder on top of the roof rack. Please advise a good reliable station wagon. Thanks a lot.

You could look at a Subaru Outback. They’re pretty good station wagons. You could also look at used Volvo station wagons from the 90s and 2000s as they also made some decent wagons. However, the Volvos will cost more in maintenance because it’s a luxury car.

There is technically the Toyota Corolla Space but it’s not sold in all of their markets.

the Mazda6 wagon is probably the best.

old Volvo’s like the XC70 are reliable and imo the best wagons ever made (avoid the newer V40 - those are bags of snakes)

i personally really like manual Duratec ford focus wagons. You can get them cheap with low mileage and they’re usually decent between 60k-130k miles. They’re very good workhorses.

ive had a lot of these when I was running a fleet.

i have a 2014 Ford Focus automatic and expect for the famously jerky powershift the car seems to be great.

If you could find one that checks out by a mechanic, a Volvo XC70 might be worth a look.

Subaru Outback (with 4 speed automatic not CVT), Volvo XC70 (Scotty has 2 videos on them check them out), and like mentioned above a first generation Toyota Venza.

A Toyota Venza maybe?  The first gen Venza was crazyreliable and is basically a Camry wagon; way more room than a Matrix and a very nice car.  The current gen is more crossovery, but still might work.

But let's face it, most contemporary crossovers are really just rebranded station wagons so the dimensions matter more than the category.  Just find a crossover with longer/lower proportions (maybe Mazda has something).

That said, if you want a true wagon, Subaru pretty much has that market cornered these days; the Outback is the gold standard. (I know there are lots of eurowagons out there if you want, but they are all overpriced and under-reliable).
