Should I get rid of my diesel truck?

Advice for new car

My current vehicle is a 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 Lonestar w/Ecodiesel. No major problems but have 2 outstanding recalls but dealerships can't seem to get the parts.

I no longer drive as much on the highway and it is hard on the exhaust regeneration system and can lead to costly repairs.

I was thinking of a regular gas vehicle. I have had a Jeep Wrangler, Subaru Crosstrek, Ford F150, Ford Mustang 5.0 & 4.6, and Toyota Tacoma Prerunner. I liked all of them for various reasons. I got rid of them either due to mileage or problems starting to occur or simply just wanted a change.

I am now on disability and want to trade what I have because it's low mileage (40k) and pay the difference to still be in a paid off state.

Any recommendations and stay away from recommendations? I actually looked at a 23 Bronco but I know they have had some issues but I don't know which engine/transmission combos are at the heart of the problems.

Thanks in advance!!!

Any recommendations

I would recommend you test drive a RAV4/CR-V and pick the winner.

All the best!

Thanks Wingman. Are you a pilot? I have my private. I miss flying. Anyway, I am not a huge fan of those 2 products but I do like the brands. I loved my Pretty nner until it got expensive to repair and I have had friends etc that loved the Honda Civics and Accords.

Yes sir. How about a new 4runner?

I have my private but have not flown in years.

Good on you brother!

The EcoDiesel is a funny engine.  It’s a great motor until it isn’t.  Some of them seem to last forever, but others blow up in 6000 miles. They don’t need a lot of repairs, but when they do, its $$$$.  It’s too bad, because Ram’s 3/4 ton diesels (made by Cummins), in contrast, are about the most bombproof engine you can get in a new vehicle.

If you have maintained it well and done minimal towing, I wouldn’t say you absolutely should get rid of it.  But there is definitely a risk it will need an expensive repair before 100,000 miles.

Cant say I’d recommend a Bronco, yet anyway.  They had some serious first-year problems, and I don’t know how many have been rectified. Maybe one of the Ford guys could comment.  Also, I think they’ve also still got a lot of markups over MSRP.

If you are looking at real 4x4’s like the Bronco, the gold standard of course is the 4Runner. The current model is ancient, but is a bona fide forever-car.  Also, even though Jeep’s electronics are not good, the 5.7 hemi is quite reliable (and this is the last year); if you got one without a lot of options it could be ok.

What exactly are you looking for in a vehicle and what size do you want

Something I can afford and easily pay off. Doesn't have to be 4wd. Just was saying what I had owned. I'm not looking for tiny it gigantic either. Just reliable and affordable.

I love my truck but truth is driving low speed short miles in small town USA is bad for blue DEF/Regen desiels and can end in very costly repairs. So I figured a swap to a gas vehicle would be a good idea. I'd prefer a truck or SUV of some sort but not some tiny compact car etc.

RAV4 or CRV if you need something more gas efficient.

Highlander if you need something bigger.

4Runner if you need something more truck like and go off-road more often.
