Aftermarket Audio System Upgrades

Scotty, I remember you saying that adding aftermarket remote starts is a bad idea. What are your thoughts about upgrading vehicle audio systems, assuming the work will be done by professionals. Thanks.

I always do a couple things to any new car I get, because they are always older cars. New Radio, lately I prefer a double din Pioneer, and Backup camera/dash cam. Having hands free calls, and the ability to play anything from my cell phone is a necessity for me.

A speaker upgrade for my 2008 GX470 is also in my to do list.

Thank-you for your prompt response. However, my question is really about new vehicles and whether adding aftermarket audio upgrades is risky and therefore not recommended.

I have an aftermarket Android stereo in my 'old' car right now. I've bought, installed various stereos on my personal cars over the years. Professional installers come in different 'flavors'. Pricing has little to do with quality of work. If they solder and heat shrink connections AND provide a warranty, maybe use them. Truthfully, if I owned a new car and it was still under warranty, there's little chance I would change anything until that warranty expired. Unless there's a pressing need to remove any part of my dash it all stays put.

New vehicles already have backup cameras as standard equipment as part of federal regulations. I would assume you're in the clear if you involve someone who professionally installs radios. All it is, is basically a soldering job. When you're installing aftermarket remote start a body control module needs to be overridden.

Personally, I think it's tacky as heck to put in generic aftermarket stereo systems. I have a 1999 Ranger that has the original sound system. I have a 2017 Mustang as well that I bought brand new, and I don't use the backup camera because half the time I forget it's there.

remote start are very risky because they require monkeying with the ignition/antitheft/engine controls. It has the potential to leave your car dead.

Stereos are just benign entertainment. They're not hooked into what makes your car go.  The worst that happens is no music.
