Hello Scotty!

Here is a fun story: my friend bought a brand new 2022 Kia Stonic 1.2 gasoline for $13.000 . after 24.000km the oil level on the dip stick is halfway between full and low. it burns as much oil as my 2003 rav4 with 250k miles, I dont think its normal...

Just wanted to share this with you guys

Also what was the oil change interval?

This is NOT normal and I'm yet to see a Kappa engine consume oil at low millage - when properly serviced!

Neither do my 2 Stonics (with the larger Kappa 1.4L engine) burn any and I haven't seen a Stonic MPi burn any either.

(Properly for this car is anywhere between 7,500-10,000 - regardless of what the owner's manual says)

Whats worrying about it is that on Gamma / Kappa engines oil consumption rarely due to piston rings (assuming a reasonable oil change schedule) but due to the engine block warping which usually happens over many hundreds of thousands of kilometers, deffinetly not over 24k.

Service it, drive 500 km, document the oil level and check after 5k km wether it has changed,

I've seen people in the past think they have oil consumption and it turning out to be just to be incorrectly filled.

And I have a feeling that's the case here given that it's a Kappa 1.25 and their reliability record so far is very solid.

If after 5k km the oil level does indeed drop, this does require investigating.

Oil change interval is made at 15k km at the dealership. I will definetley check the level after the oil change and do what you said. Thank you very much!!

That’s not frequently enough and can cause the piston rings to stick.
Especially considering that the 1.25L engine has to work really hard to move the Stonic as that’s a ~1,300kg car with luggage - much more than the typical applications of that engine (Cars that weighing under 900kg and have low aero design usually used at most with two passengers)…
If oil burning persists and Kia won’t remedy it, try replacing the oil frequently until every oil change the oil you replace is reasonably bright.

Thanks for sharing, it seems the quality is way too low than before.

Your friend should fix it under warranty and then get rid of it.
