A week ago I was driving home 56 miles to see family. It was really windy and rainy here in Wales and for most of the journey I was on the motorway, At the final leg of my journey through the countryside I hit a pretty large deep puddle going 30 mph, I was in it for about 2 seconds, It slowed my car down considerably but I was out of it in a flash. I'm a hypochondriac when it comes to my the health of my poor baby i10, Anyway shes a 2019 Hyundai i10, 14,000 miles 3 cylinder 1 litre engine.

Scotty shows how to diagnose this situation in this video. In his example, the knock is much louder than the noise your engine is making. Then again, we have no known sound level for reference, so it's hard to say for sure, at least to my ears. Scotty's shouting in this video, and every example I've ever heard of rod slap, it sounds like a very heavy, hollow banging noise. Yours sounds like it could be valve noise, but others may have other opinions. Follow Scotty's tips to figure out if water got into your engine. Since it's been a week, water's probably evaporated, but it leaves evidence it was there. Your air filter will look like it's gotten wet and the engine oil will appear to be over-filled if that much water got in.

Regardless if you damaged your engine this time, hopefully you learned a lesson, if you truly care about your car and yourself, never drive through deep water.
