Are Toyota side mirrors shaking still an issue?

I'm trying to buy a 2024 Toyota camry LE and on my test drive (odometer has 12 miles on it) I noticed the driver mirror shaking. It's shaking on the highway and side streets. It wasn't a windy day.  The dealerships first technician couldn't find anything wrong. They're asking a second technician.   I did a deep dive and it looks like side mirrors vibrating were a problem in the past and might still be a problem in the 2023s.  Should I run?  The dealership has knocked a thousand off the MSRP and it's been on the lot for a while.  I can't find a solution on Google for the problem.  I found comments about people selling their 2023 camrys with 7k miles on them because they can't use their side mirrors and Toyota doesn't know how to fix it.  I found a recall on side mirrors in 2020 on a different Toyota line.

Also the carpet (without floor mats) is bubbling.

Should I run? Is this repairable?

Recall: (might need to repaste the link in a web browser) https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2020/MC-10185772-9999.pdf

Thanks!

the driver mirror shaking.

well if they aren't shaking, they're melting in the sun.

Get your act together Toyota! 😡

should be easy enough to fix with some shims or stick tape or something

If we add shims then I would think we couldn't adjust the mirror right? Tilt it up and down? I don't think it's the housing vibrating just the glass. I didnt hear they're melting yikes!

Unfortunately, Toyota, like many other manufacturers is trying to cut corners by using cheaper parts in order to save money and to stay competitive.

Quality will most likely keep getting worse since OEMs think that people want to drive computers.  Instead of building basic and simple cars that can get you from point A to point B, OEMs are building computers on wheels...

I get that, it's time to sell my 2006 Honda accord (278k miles) and the new cars feel so much cheaper. The doors feel thin, the engines sound wimpy, I'm kinda tempted just to rebuild my car forever. Also there's no tracking and data agreements that toyota can track me in my car....less computer and more car.

not if you add them in between the mirror and pivoting mechanism. I was just guessing ... I haven't seen the inside of it.

But I just now re-read your question and realized that you don't actually own the vehicle and were just looking. (which works in your favor.)

so it would seem Toyota knows and has issued a recall. Most likely, the car you test drove did not have it repaired. I'm pretty sure that dealers are required to address all current safety recalls before selling the vehicle. So just insist that you want it repaired before you would consider buying it. You can point out the carpet too. Everything is repairable if you're inventive enough. If you think the vehicle will sell out from under you, then you could take a gamble and hope they fix it after you buy. But you will have less leverage, and they will probably try to drag it out.

Anyway, both are minor items, and they wouldn't be deal breakers for me . But then I'm used to repairing things myself.

Are you trying to solve equations in the rear view mirrors? I just glance at mine, and tend to not care about such stuff.

Is the shaking making you dizzy?

side view

Side mirrors are shaking. It's making me dizzy and the test drive wasn't that long.

Rear view is normal.

I’m indeed referring to the side view mirrors. I should’ve edited my reply to reflect that, sorry. I’ve been in some cars which had bad engine mounts where all the mirrors shook like mad and it’s dizzying.

You'd have to add shims between the glass and housing after adjusting the mirror. Then remove and repeat if the mirror needs to be re-adjusted.

I have a car where the driver side mirror vibrates but it's a 1986 model and the mechanism is just worn from age. Seeing that in a new car demonstrates just how bad the race to the bottom in quality has become.

Yeah.... the shaking of the side view mirror on the driver's side would be very annoying to me too, and on a brand spanking new car it would be unacceptable. Additionally it would be a safety hazard especially driving at night if it makes it more difficult to pinpoint an object in that mirror which would take more time and attention from the road ahead while you are gazing into the shaking.

The technical service bulletin pdf that you provided for a RAV4 shaking mirror repair pertains to the whole mirror assembly shaking, not specifically the glass and it's backing plate (within the assembly housing) shaking, as you described. The rav4 repair included replacing the mirror assembly mounting bolts (with longer ones) where it mounts to the outside of the door, as well as installing a new door mirror reinforcement bracket to the inside of the door panel. But this does not seem to be your problem.

I would not want to have to make self-repairs to a brand new car because the dealership service service shop doesn't know how. Perhaps the suggestion given of wedging a shim between the mirror and what's behind it would work if you are able to gain proper access to that area and precisely install it, but I would be afraid of pressing it a little too hard into place and then, "SNAP" there goes the mirror with no warranty to cover it. Or they may vibrate loose over time. Maybe the stick tape? Especially if it would still allow you to adjust your mirror.

Out of curiosity, have you test driven a different Camry to compare this mirror issue to? Certainly they can not all be like that. Perhaps that's why this one has been sitting on the lot for an extended time....well, that plus the bubbling carpet.

It would be nice to benefit from the $1k discount, but if you end up with something that is irritating over a period of 10-12+ of driving and which may even grow worse with time, personally I would be checking around at other vehicles. I mean it is already bothering you now and you don't even own it.
