Auto light 2100 carburetor will not idle or run at pedal depressed but it will run if I rev and feather the pedal.

  • hi Scotty thank you for taking my question. My 1967 mustang has a all original engine drivetrain and auto light 2102 barrel carburetor out of the blue it was running beautifully and started just stalling at idle if I depress the pedal to read the engine at a fixed amount it also stalls I can rev the engine and feather the pedal and the engine will still run and rev but as soon as I depress the pedal at a constant amount or idle it stalls. I have checked my fuel pump fuel filter and I’m waiting for an accelerator pump diaphragm to come to try that. I have not checked the float  I have adjust the fuel mixtures to no avail. I have also checked the vacuum advance diaphragm by sucking on the two and I see the advancement of the distributor. Unable to see any noticeable vacuum leaks anywhere although I did not try spraying carb cleaner on it although I can’t get it to run to do so in any case. Thank you for your help. Rob

I have the same carburetor on one of my cars.

Make sure everything else on the engine is OK. If it still has ignition points make sure they haven't slipped. Check that distributor has not loosened up and changed timing. Double-check for vacuum leaks.

Assuming everything else is good it is probably running way too lean. "Feathering" the throttle operates the accelerator pump while the pedal is moving and provides more gas. Your idle passages may be plugged up. You should check float level. If the carb has not already been rebuilt with ethanol-resistant materials now may be the time to do it.

Definitely do what @chucktobias said.  Get a new rebuild kit with the new Viton seals that are impervious to the ethanol in today's fuels that eat up the soft parts of the old carbs.
