Scotty its my first time buying a car and I'm thinking of buying a 2003 mustang Gt that's automatic. Do you think that's a good idea. And if not what's a good muscle car that's reliable but not too expensive.

I've always liked the New Edge GT's, both manual and automatic.

They were only putting out 260HP back then, so the auto transmissions weren't being overworked. The trick is to find one in good condition.

Things to look out for on New Edge GT's:

1. ABS module - These go bad all the time. If the traction control light is on and can not be turned off, odds are the ABS is out.

2. Trunk Rust - Pop the trunk and inspect the spot where rust typically forms. If you are standing at the trunk, the back corners are where you want to check. They are infamous for rusting through if people do not keep debris out of there. If those areas are really clean, it could indicate a smart owner who has cared for the car.

3. Steering Wheel Won't Center/Moves Up and Down - This means the steering column bearings are shot and it needs a new column. This is a BIG project, so be sure to see if you have a lot of play in the wheel. Even with the car still, just pull up and down and see if you get any clunking or unusual amount of movement.

4. Factory Radio - They almost always fail.

5. Third Brake Light - The lens almost always needs replacement

6. Horn - They go out over time and are tough to get at. They are behind the wheel well liner on the driver's side. But just make sure it has a working horn.

7. Power Features - The power windows, locks, etc. go out over time. Be sure to check them.

8. Oxidized Headlights - The headlights are poor quality and most turn yellow and need replacement.

9. Whining Rear Differential - At slow speed, you may hear some whining from the rear end if it is worn out. Common on these cars if they have been driven hard.

10. Check For Burnt Rubber - Most guys check the rear wheel well for signs of burnt rubber. Most sellers will clean them well to hide abuse. However, what they don't clean is the last 2 feet of the exhaust pipes. If there are small chunks of rubber there, odds are it has seen a burnout box or two.

11. Drivers Seat Bolster - Check for excessive wear in the seat material.

12. Stay away from anything with nitrous

13. Stay away from salvage titles

That's a pretty good starter's guide. Do your usual check the oil, etc. but include these items as well. Then you should be able to get a feel for the shape the car is in. If you have a mechanic who can check it out before purchase, even better.

But they are good cars if you take care of them. Good luck!

I had a 02 Mustang GT with manual and it was good and also a 99 Mustang GT with Auto and it was also good too. Maybe I just got lucky with the '99. They're a better car with a manual. Automatics, hit or miss. They're popular to take to the dragstrip, so you have to be careful when shopping for them, either transmission will really depend on how the car was treated by previous owner(s).
