I have a regular auto parts store, i asked for oil and filter for my 2008 Chevy Tahoe (275,000 miles). " I don't care what brand, just whatever you got back there that you need to sell (discontinued, price reduced, or whatever).
He came back with some quarts of 10w40 (name brand, high quality oil, just cheap because it's not on the shelf anymore)
I said "ooh, I need 5w30 for my Tahoe it says so right on the oil cap"
he said this "10w40 will probably be better for you in your 15 year old truck"
I dunno, sounds good to me. What do you think?
West Texas, Summer time if that matters
He's an idiot. Use only what the manufacturer recommends.
Don't ask part store guys for mechanical advice. If they could work on cars, they wouldn't be behind a counter.
"Autoparts store guys" are not mechanics. In the old days sometimes you'd get a retired mechanic working at a local parts store. In today's parts store chains you're lucky if the minimum wage kid behind the counter can even find the right part in the computer.
Modern engines are sensitive to oil viscosity. Use the oil that the manufacturer calls for.
