hello,

I’ve got a 2012 Honda accord and a couple of years after purchasing, the 550 cranking amp battery died.  It was under warranty so the Honda dealership replaced it.  Again, a couple years ago by same thing happens again.  We replaced the 550 cranking amp battery with a 700/750 cranking amp battery.  Car lights started turning on all over the place and we pulled into a lot and had to have it towed home.  We replaced alternator.  Now a couple years later, same exact issue.  Several lights start showing on dash, radio turning off and on, on its own, etc.  What could be causing this problem?  My dad says a ground wire short or corrosion.  I’ve also heard it could be the ECM.  My husband says it’s time to get rid of it, what’s your thoughts?

Just my personal opinion. If the problem only comes up every 3-5 years, and is typically solved by a battery replacement (and nothing else is wrong with car), I would keep the car.

Batteries are relatively easy to change. And $100-$200 bucks for an battery every 3-5 years isn’t much in the grand scheme of things.

If it is more frequent than that, I would consider getting rid of it, or try tracing what the actual problem is.

Is it an AGM battery?

What part of the country / climate do you live in?

I noticed that folks that live in extreme like desert (super hot summers, cold winters) tend to need more frequent battery replacements. That just anecdotal evidence.

Was the alternator replacement aftermarket rebuild or OEM?  I would fix it and keep it.
