So I have a 2016 Toyota corolla and I was jumping someone's car and noticed blue corrosion on the positive cable. Now I had an older 91 corolla which had brown corrosion and I had to get a wire brush and spend a lot of time scraping it off. I went and bought a new brush and prepared to scrap the heck out of it. It ended up having the consistency of dirt. I could easily blow it off. I did have to replace the battery about a year ago. What causes blue corrosion? Is there any way to stop it?
You can also get the felt fiber washers. From my experience, they seem to work well, and keep the post really clean.
You can get an anti-corrosion spray to protect the battery terminals.
What causes blue corrosion?
gas production by the battery. It's made worse if the battery or alternator are working too hard. Have your charging system load tested.
The battery contains sulfuric acid. Copper and sulfuric acid produce copper sulfate, which is vivid blue when pure. I worked at a metal plating company and worked as a solution control technician for 5 years. I maintained all of the different tanks they plated in, including several acid copper tanks. All batteries eventually start to vent a tiny little bit of sulfuric acid as they age. The plastic becomes brittle, etc. It's normal, and you can get various sprays or dielectric grease that will resist corrosion.
