Best first used car in Europe

Hello Scotty,

I would like to buy my first car. It will be used because I don't have much money and I like older cars more.

I found out some but I would like to know your opinion. I am deciding between Toyota Celica (5th or 6th gen), Toyota Paseo, Toyota Corolla TS, Honda S2000, Honda Prelude, Mazda RX-7, Mazda RX-8 (both with rotary engine) and Mitsubishi Eclipse.

I know that you don't like Mitsubishi cars but were they better before Renault took over them?

Do you have some experience with russian cars (for example Lada Niva)? I know that their quality is not the best but they are cheap and pretty much indestructible.

Which one is best and will hold up over time? I am from mid Europe.

Thank you for response.

Corolla. What about a VW with a manuel transmission they are really popular there and are pretty cheap my dad's uncle had a VW Transporter 24 years old lot's of miles in Turkey with realtively low amount of problems.

I don't want any VW. They are not that cheap and their quality is going down more and more. I want reliable car not a giant money pit.

I see. Then I don't know what your budget is but the 2013+ Corolla in Europe seems like a great first car it is also very safe and very well built.

My threshold price is 10,000$, but ideal price would be around 7,000$. Is it possible to get a Toyota Corolla TS in a good condition for this price?

Im in US im not sure the prices where you are but a mid-2000's corolla should be good in that price range. I believe its considered the e130/e140 Corolla. That was the last generation of the overbuilt toyota.

Ok, thank you.

I’d really go with a Toyota Corolla, after a good mechanic checks it out first, before you buy it. It will be the cheapest to maintain & run the longest out of your list.

The S2000 is probably not the wisest choice for a first car for anybody.

Get a Corolla, cut your teeth, learn how to fix it. Then when you’re confident in your driving skills, sure, go ahead & upgrade to the car of your choice. But as your first car, get a cheap beater which is inexpensive to fix.

All the best!

Thank you for your opinion.

No worries, mate. Good luck!

How much are S2000’s going for there?

Ah, you gonna buy me one for Christmas?!
Fun play car for sure... highly recommend NOT A FIRST CAR FOR ANYONE! safety vs skill experience...

They cost too much for my opinion.

Agree, but would like to have one to play with! Maybe one day I can find one cheap But at some point, I bet the price will start increasing on these even more.

Their price starts from: 10 400$ and goes up to 29 500$ here. They are not cheap I know but I like its looks. It is the least likely option for me, but I still included it in the list.

Lada Niva is great offroad but also great fuel consumer. We had one about 25 years ago. We were refueling it almost every day after short distance driven.

Thank you for your opinion. I know that they are not good fuel economy cars. Russians don't have to deal with high fuel consumption because they have oil everywhere. What engine did it have and was it reliable?

It was 1.6 L one, which broke down.
