Hi Scotty/Forum members,
I came over from stumbling on your Youtube series. I'm looking to buy a used BMW M2 2018 or M2 Competition 2019. These are around 40-55K. I'm only looking to keep it for 3-4 years and then selling it. I know BMW have lots of plastics and maintenance/repair is high and probably low on your list.
Planning to change my own oil, trans fluid etc. Do you think there's gonna be a lot of repairs I'll need to do in the 3-4 years and do you think I'm better off leasing a new vehicle instead. I don't have a business where I can write off the lease so its just a comparison of buying used vs a lease.
You should be fine since it's fairly new, and that motor is not a whole new motor, it's been out for some time now.
If it's a weekend toy, it's ok but daily driver, i don't think so.
I would keep it till it reaches 100K miles and then sell it. Leasing is not great from a financial point of view, but much better than keeping a modern BMW long term.
I would be careful with those engines. They are well-known for their crankhub failures even on a stock setup. Have a good mechanic check the engine to make sure it is in good shape. Stay away from a used one that was driven hard and was tuned by the owner. Almost all of these are tuned when young people get their hands on them, and it can wear out the engine way quicker.
You do relise that the US versions of the m sport bmw dont actually have proper m line engines most only have the standard 30 ltr i units in them they badge them up as m sport cars but dont put thd proper engines in only true german ones bought from germany have true m engines in them same as the merc amg only the c36 was a true amg engine build from scratch using yhe 2.8 merc engine no other engine was ever made by amg they yse yherecstandard motor and turbo them and thats about it
I say, … skip it! Trust me, you only be smiling perhaps just twice, … 1 - on the day you buy it, and 2 - on the day some poor sob will buy it from you being not as smart as you will be on that day.
Anyway, … if I were you, I would just lease it, … lease a brand new car, … drive it for three years, … and than just dump it at the lessor’s doors. It will be an expensive venture, to be sure, … but it will be a much, much cheaper venture than the 3 year ownership of of someone’s used sports car. Guaranteed. Depreciation of these class of cars is absolutely brutal!
