Hey I just bought a 02 Honda Civic 1.7l from a mechanic I know. He mentioned he had to take the thermostat out. When he brought it, kept overheating. He said thermostat kept getting stuck. He said he got a new one in there but few months later kept getting stuck again. So he eventually just took it out. what the heck could be causing this issue. Car has 155k miles. Got it for $1400 in Hawaii Big Island. He said car doesn't even need a thermostat cause it doesn't get cold in Hawaii.
The thermostat controls the coolant flow from the radiator to the engine and the temperature rating is based on how fast the engine is supposed to reach its optimum operating temperature. If it were me, I would get the factory recommended temperature thermostat but make sure it is a fail safe model. If it breaks, it'll stay opened. Fail safes are made by Stant and many other manufacturers. You might want to also check the function of your temperature sensor/sending unit. Also, did your "mechanic" properly burp the air out of the system to eliminate hot spots?
I will prob do that. He has had the car for two years like that. Could this cause any kind of engine damage and if so how could I test to see if damage has occurred
Multiple instances of over heating can cause damage. I'd get a compression test to see if it's OK.
152 152 148 148
This is what it was, tested today.
It looks good to me.
For a nearly 20 year old car, that looks pretty good to me.
2002 Honda Civic 1.7l Automatic, 155,000 miles, Pahoa, Hawaii
Recently purchased from a mechanic in the area. He had it for two years. He mentioned he bought it really cheap and had a overheating issue of which he fixed. Anyways I was told this about the car AFTER i bought it.
So apparently the thermostat kept getting stuck or something, like after 2-3 months it would start having overheating issues again, thermostat would get stuck. So he just took it out all together. Now if it was a oem from dealer? I doubt it but can ask.
What would cause this issue? It does still reach normal operating temperature. It actually went a lil past half on the temperature reading which concerned me. The mechanic told me the car doesn't need a thermostat, because it never gets really cold in Hawaii.
Car still seems to have good compression. Here's the readings I got
152, 152, 148, 148
Didn't we just answer this question a few days ago?

I have a 02 Honda Civic 156k miles. 1.7l Automatic
Mechanic I bought it from mentioned the thermostat was taken out because kept getting stuck and would overheat. I seem to only have an issue with it overheating when I'm going up big hills for long periods of time. Coolant will start bubbling. But in town it's fine for the most part. Takes a lil longer to warm up too.
I see no exhaust smoke whatsoever. I don't notice a lose in coolant. So could it even be the head gasket?
