I am trying to decide what rout to take in repairing my Silverado. I bought it years ago with about 71,000 miles on it, since then I have hit 220,000 and a lifter has broken and I am fairly certain it is the famous AFM lifter probably number 6. A good 100,000 miles on this truck are interstate miles and I have heard that the wear on an engine is much less than stop and go driving so I don't know if that can play a part in how to fix the truck. I could try to replace just the broken lifter or at least the 4 AFM lifters as I understand if there is no cam damage as option one and by the AFM delete OBD2 port device to turn off the AFM. I could do a delete kit with or without a new cam, or I could buy a long block and just replace it all together. Each has it's own cost but I keep my vehicles a long time and I love my truck and want to keep it versus trying to buy anything new with the OEMs and their ridiculous price tags today on new trucks. Would the bottom end of my engine be worn out as well as the top if I just went with a lifter replacement or delete kit is my main question, I am wondering if others have had to make this decision and what did you do? I live in Southern Middle Tennessee and would be interested in trusted mechanics in between Nashville and Chattanooga that could do the work for me which ever fix I end up choosing.
since the engine has to be torn apart you might as well use the delete kit. But with 220k the engine will have significant wear all around. You may wish instead to install a reman engine with AFM already removed.
It all depends on your budget, skills, condition of the truck, etc. etc. ...
