I recently bought a 2014 Subaru Outback with about 130000 miles on it. Runs and shifts great (except for a noisey exhaust heat shield), but gets about 23 mpg on average when it was manufactured to have 24-32. I do a lot of highway driving and I’m still getting 23 mpg, is there anything I can do to improve it? Thanks!
You can't count on achieving the EPA mileage estimate, that's arrived at under artificial conditions and there are many variables. It doesn't sound all that far off. A friend with an Outback just a few years newer averages about 25 mpg overall. (I'm assuming you have the boxer 4 since the H6 is a real gas-guzzler.)
Standard tuneup (spark plugs, filter) may help if it hasn't been done already. You could also have a mechanic scan it with a dealer-level scan tool to see if there are any issues needing attention.
Although it wouldn't affect gas mileage the CVT fluid should probably be changed to get as much life out of the transmission as possible.
