car: Mercedes A220 2019

Hi everyone,

I recently took my car to a [expletive deleted] show of an oil place called Jiffy Lube. They did a top-down oil extraction on my car, later on, to find out from the Mercedes service center that my car does not have a dipstick or oil tube in general for that engine. The car was slipping the next day after the jiffy lube oil change. Good thing we caught it fast. After further inspection, it was found that they sucked my transmission line tube resulting in slipping and car overheating. Mercedes was able to service my transmission and the drive is smooth and gear shifts are normal. Three weeks after getting the transmission serviced I started to hear a single beat click noise exactly when it hits 12mph around 1500rpm to 2000rpm. The shift is clean and smooth but the click is rather unusual. The click sounds like a coin hitting a tin can. It is coming from the front driver's side.

keep in mind the transmission had a flush and added new transmission fluid to it.

Also, this issue only occurs when it starts at 0mph and once hits 12mph it clicks. If say for example we are driving at 9mph and it goes to 12mph then no click sound appears. Please help if you can. thank you in advance.

That was a big mistake and while we're sympathetic please watch your language. This is a family friendly forum.

Not a surprise for Jiffy Lube. That kind of thing happened to a friend of mine some years ago. Not only did they drain the transmission instead of the engine, they then proceeded to dump more oil into the engine. My friend had to sue them for the damage.

Power flushing a transmission is not a good idea. It may well have caused more damage.

Transmissions do not take kindly to that kind of abuse. Chances are it has sustained internal mechanical damage, first from Jiffy Lube and possibly more damage from being flushed. You'll need a transmission expert familiar with those cars to assess the extent of the damage.

@chucktobias Thank you for your feedback. What you mentioned about your friend is 100% exactly what happened to me. Is there any chance you exactly know what happened in court? Or maybe if we can chat on a different chat service. Any help would be appreciated.

the clicking isn't necessarily the transmission. It could be a lot of things, like a bad bearing or CV axle. Check in our FAQ about locating sounds, or have the car inspected by an actual mechanic (ie. no chains like Jiffy lube)

It was quite a few years (decades) ago but my friend (a lawyer) prevailed as I recall. Jiffy Lube put up a fight but ultimately had to pay for repairing the damage which was a burned-out transmission and blown engine seals. Also this is someone I've lost touch with over time so I really cannot obtain any more details at this point.

The problem in your case is there may be latent damage that is not showing up at present since the trans is largely working OK. Nonetheless the service life of the transmission may be shortened because of what was done to it. Unfortunately that kind of thing is very difficult to prove. Of course take note of what @imperator said, it's always possible you've developed a coincidental problem elsewhere that's making the noise. Have the car gone over by a good Mercedes mechanic.

And - never, ever go back to Jiffy Lube or any similar quick lube joint to have your car serviced in the future!
