Car won’t start

97 Chevrolet Lumina 3.1.My uncle spray starting fluid into the car and it will start and cut off. We can hear the fuel pump come on but fuel isn’t getting to the injectors. I’ve noticed when I was driving the car how I experienced slow acceleration. Sometimes I would hear a funny noise under the hood when I start the car. It would sound like something trying to open. We replace the crankshaft sensor by the balancer but don’t know how to get to the one that is mounted on the block. Here are the codes the scanner gave: P0304, P0102,P0141 and P1406.

Hi lynellawynn.
You need to turn off the "Sent from the all new AOL app for iOS" messages on your posts before coming to the forum please. The site can be accessed from any browser, such as Safari on your iPhone, by going to http://carkiller.com. Thank you.

Ok

When he examined the fuse box, he saw that no wire is connected to the fuel injector fuse.

You're getting spark so the problem isn't the 3X Crank sensor which you're worried about.

(You access that one from under the car and it's a pain but can be done)

You don't have to take my word for it. If you want to confirm that it's producing a signal you can check it without crawling under the car at the ignition control module using a multimeter .

Here's a link to a step by step tutorial on how to do that.

https://easyautodiagnostics.com/gm/3.1L-3.4L/testing-the-ignition-module-and-crank-sensor-4

Since it started on starting fluid you want to check if the fuel injectors are getting Power and a Ground signal, and if so, then you want to check if you have sufficient fuel pressure.

Here's how your fuel injectors are wired:

You need to check for Power and a Ground Signal on a fuel injector connector.

Here's a link on how to do that with a test light:

https://youtu.be/pzeOz-seIQE?t=335

First, check for Power on the Pink wires (KEY ON) going to the injectors.

If there isn't Power on the Pink wires, check your Fuel Injector fuse (F/INJN) fuse in the underhood fuse box.

Then check for the Ground signal with the test light like the video shows.

If you're getting both then check the fuel pressure.

You're lucky that you have a Schrader Valve on the fuel rail so it's easy.

The fuel pump pressure for the 1995-1999 3.1L Chevrolet Lumina and Monte Carlo is: 41-47 PSI Key On With Engine Off.

One more thing. That P1406 code. It's an EGR code. If the EGR Valve isn't closing all the way it can make it almost impossible for your Lumina to start.

If everything else checks out OK, you might want to clean the EGR Valve

Thanks

Got another question. The fuel injectors fuse is good but there’s no fire going to it. Can you tell me what you think is causing it?

If the F/INJN Fuse is good and you aren't getting Power to the fuel injectors then use your test light WITH THE KEY IN THE RUN POSITION and test for Power on both test tabs of that F/INJN Fuse
.
Like this

.
If you have Power on both tabs (or even if you don't), pull out the fuse and examine the fuse's sockets in the fuse box just to make sure there isn't any corrosion or heat damage
.
If all that looks good then the problem is in the wiring harness between the fuse box and the fuel injectors
.
However, if there isn't Power on that fuse then the problem is between (and including) the ignition switch, including any ignition switch fuse, and the fuse box
.
Let's say you have power at the fuse but not on the Pink wire side at the fuel injector connectors
.
You'd want to see if there's power coming into the fuel injector harness
.
Your fuel injector harness looks like this:

.
So you'd want to unplug that big connector and check for corrosion or damage again, then use your test light to see if Power is reaching the "fuse box side" of the connector
.
You can narrow this down that way
.
I was able to find a better wiring diagram of your fuel injector circuit
.
It begins on the 1st page at the F/INJN fuse and continues onto the 2nd page where it goes through that connector we just talked about and goes to the individual fuel injectors. (I made the Pink wire thicker so it's easier to follow)
.

.

Thanks

Keep us posted on how your troubleshooting progresses and the solution for the fix
.
I'm curious if you have Power on both test tabs of that F/INJN fuse and if so, is it making it to the fuel injector connectors

Well many thinking conk on a car but since it starts at starting fluid the ignition system is working in the engine is okay. So you have a fuel problem now just cuz you hear the pump you would have the pressure tested to see if it has the right pressure first. If not that generally means the injectors are not being pulse which can be a crankshaft sensor camshaft sensor wiring or even main computer failure

Thanks. My uncle is going to get a fuel gauge so he can test it.

Got a question? If it’s the crankshaft sensor that is mounted to the motor, how can you get to it.
