[Solved] Should I buy a 1998 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport in Malaysia?

Hey what do you think of a 1998 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (a.k.a Mitsubishi Challenger/Montero Sport/Shogun Sport) With a 3-liter V6 NA engine outputs about 174hp, sadly equipped with a 4-speed auto instead of manual. My dad's friend put a price tag equivalent to 712USD (someone sold it to dad's friend with that price because that dude needed quick cash). Overdrive won't engage and transfer case only works in 2WD mode but dad can fix it on his own. Would it be a good temporary SUV for a family until the dealership finish repairing our accident-involved original car? Price of 712 US Dollars sounds like a good deal

Oh yeah forgot to add, it had not reached 100k miles yet because theres just not enough highways in my place. Interior and exterior like paintjobs and anything else still original not falling off or anything. Frame kinda decent too no rust. And its not the diesel version

Which region is this purchase going to be in?

@InThrustWeTrust, actually I am not from the united states. I lived in Malaysia and if I find this SUV good enough the purchase will be made between my family and our family's close friend. No dealership involved

Since it won’t shift into overdrive, I’m assuming the transmission has issues. You’ll want to have that checked out by a pro transmission shop.

However, 3000 ringgits is not much for a vehicle, so if the engine is still in good shape and if it runs and drives fine otherwise, it might be okay to drive temporarily.

You said your dad can fix some of the issues, but don’t throw too much money into that vehicle because you don’t know if its an accidental or flooded vehicle (in its history) and what else may need fixing down the road. Just fix whatever minor things are required to keep it running and junk it if something major needs work, which exceeds the value of the vehicle.

Semoga berjaya!

Thank you for your advice! Dad had test drive it not long ago and the engine sounds pretty smooth, shift alright(overdrive wont be a problem i guess) and if it can get us from A to B it would be a good temporary daily drive. Thanks again! (or Terima Kasih in Malay)

Appreciated the answer @MountainManJoe but I need an opinion about the "Pajero Sport" version with a V6 gas. Pajero and Pajero Sport are two separate vehicles here in my country

I don’t know too much about this vehicle.  I do remember seeing something them around back in the late 90’s early 2000’s. The only thing I know is that the V6 in that vehicle has been applied to various Chrysler, Mitsubishi, and Hyundai products, and had a long history from 1986-2011. Is $712 a lot for you? How long will it take to repair your other car? What is wrong with your other car?

My other car got quite wrecked in a self accident, is the main family car to get anywhere, insurance covered it tho but the accident was 4 days ago and it would approximately take 3-4 months. $712 is a no problem for me and my family because mom repeatly told me to ask dad to negotiate with his friend(current owner) so I guess its a green light from my fam

If you need a car, you need a car. I usually recommend a Toyota or Honda SUV, but the choices may be slim where you are.

Personally I would take a toyota or honda but those had absurd prices when used. So yeah I dont have much of a choice
