Using Thicker Oil On Older Engine

Topic starter

Hey there, I drive a 2006 Ford Fusion V6 with about 180,000 miles on it. I changed the oil recently and was told by more than a few people to get thicker oil. (10w-30 instead of 5w-20) They claim the thicker viscosity of the oil would be better for the worn out parts of the engine as well as the bad seals, probably by preventing leakage. Is this fact or just hearsay? Thank you in advance.

Extra Facts:

the engine and tranny both still run very strong. But the car sat for about a year until I bought it and started driving it.

Thicker oil can play havoc with the variable valve timing hardware in modern engines.

So then just use what’s recommended by your owner’s manual.

Is your engine leaking oil?
