Hi,
I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado 5.3l. It has over 200k miles on it. I have recently bought it from a family member of mine.
The problem I have is on cold starts it has a loud thicking noise like maybe the lifters is bad, but maybe 2-3 seconds it goes away. I was thinking because of it's high mileage to put 10w40 instead of 10w30.
Will I Hurt the engine using that ?
Should i use 5w30 full synthetic instead ?
Thank you so much.
Those have hydraulic lifters if memory serves correctly. As they age they leak down overnight. Take a few minutes to pump up on cold starts. Eventually the lifter will collapse and tick all the time. In the winter switch to 5w-30. It’ll help when its cold. Thicker oil will just make it take longer to pump the lifter up. But don’t go thinner than 30.
