Hey Scotty - luv your videos. I do hope you can pass the torch and your knowledge to one of your grand kids!
I have a 2020 stock Mustang GT, manual. It's my daily driver and I don't have any plans to modify anything. I love this car the way it is, that V8 sound will never get old. Do I really need a Oil catch can? I seen all of the youtube Videos, heck I have seen yours too! If this was such a design flaw, wouldn't the engineers at Ford have something that came with the engine?
Thanks
John in Jersey.
Your Mustang GT has the 3rd generation Coyote 5.0L V8 which in addition to getting direct injection also retains the port injection, which actually sprays (and therefore cleans) the back of the intake valves so it’s not susceptible to carbon buildup there. Since you still have the port injection, therefore you don’t need a catch can.
I would recommend one. I had one on both my 18 and 19 and it caught a lot of crap. Just go with the JLT 3.0.
@DayWalker is not wrong. The GT does have dual injection and in 99% of cases that negates the need for a catch can. But I have found in my experience that, for whatever reason, the dirty side (passenger side) of that particular motor does benefit from having a can. Just one of the many gremlins in those 3rd Gen 5.0L's that makes no sense. The driver's side can is a waste of money.
Catch cans and their benefits can be argued forever. But no, engineers at Ford would not include it if it were necessary. They would sell you the car, and then offer the part as an add on. And notice, Ford Racing makes catch cans specifically for the 5.0L Mustang GT.
Think of it as cheap insurance. I know mine did a great job and the install takes 5 minutes. Or, if you aren't keeping the car long term, don't do it. Your motor, your money.
