I'm in Los Angeles, California, weather is 80+ yr round.

Doing research online I have reached the conclusion that most cars before the 80's require zinc in the oil to run properly. I recently got my hands on the service manual and it says to use one of two types of oil:

20W - 40 for warmer climates above 32 degrees (an oil type I can find nowhere online from any brand)

10W - 30 for colder climates as low as -10 degrees Fahrenheit (LA never gets this cold).

  • Castrol GTX and Valvoline both have a classic car specific Oil w/Zinc, but they are 20W - 50
  • Rotella Shell has 10W - 30 and a 15W - 40 but they are marketed for Diesel Engines and are either full synthetic or synthetic blend with no mention of a zinc additive, I am weary because I know synthetic oils weren't a thing back then and they don't have zinc.
  • This brand called Lucas has 10W - 30 and 20W - 50, but I have never heard of this brand before and am scared to try a no name brand (if they are indeed no name) but still it would not be quite what I need.

Am I over thinking it? or should I go for any of the 10W - 30 oils?

Also for Gas the manual says to use "regular" but "regular gas back then had an Octane of 95 - 98 minimum (according to google and various forums) so should I be using premium 93 Octane by today's standards?

* Thank You, and as you guys can tell yea I don't know much about cars, but have this classic, and am binge watching Scotty's YT Channel to learn.*

Well actually the new GF6 oil is fine for any type of car. It's the best oil out there. I would use whatever weight oil and originally required and buy it in a GF6 form. As for fuel, it depends it's been modified or anything. You probably would run better on premium. But yeah you could run it out of tank a regular. If it doesn't ping it runs okay that would be cool

Whoa! the man, the Legend himself! Thanks Scotty, appreciate the advice. Only G6 oil I was able to find was Castrol and Valvoline, So I will chose between those two. Thank You
