How long will my Corolla last

toyota corolla 2005

Hey Scotty. My odometer stopped at 299,999 so not sure how much. I did a drain and refill using factory transmission fluid after it never had one at 300k+ miles. How long do I have with this thing? I also got codes p0420 (I tried the lacquer thinner but code came back) and P0741. Thank you

If the transmission is not slipping and the engine is not exhibiting excessive oil burning or bad noises it may last quite some time. Or, it may crater tomorrow. There's really no way to know for certain.

OK. Changed the air filter, radiator and doing the spark plugs next. Thanks

That's a lot of miles and 17 yrs. old, so how long will it last?

I'm going to start riding around with nothing. Taking all my stuff out so when I get stranded, I can just leave it there lol.

Why don’t you get another gauge cluster?

How are you keeping track of your oil change intervals, etc?

How was the condition of the ATF when you last changed it? See here -

The atf was in the worst condition. dark with burnt. I found out until later that I shouldn't have done the drain and refill.

I have to talk to Toyota because supposedly, they
promise to pay for half of the new odometer since they built them that way

If it was never ever replaced before, and then replaced at 300,000 miles, then yes, it may have been a bad idea. That’s why it’s a good idea to check the condition of the fluid first, before replacing. Did you save the old ATF in a clean container? If it still drives & shifts fine, who knows how long it’ll last.. Get the TC solenoid looked at, like the others recommended. Atleast price it out.

I didn't keep the old atf. Its still driving and shifting but not sure if its doing its job properly

I'm not sure if it's slipping now so I'm going to go check it out with a mechanic but before I changed the atf, the rpm would go up and not accelerate at all most of the time at startup. It has improved since then but don't know if I did more harm than good.

Thanks for the link. Rockauto is awesome. Not sure, but I swear Scotty says that its not worth changing the torque converter on these older cars because its a lot of work in one of his vids.

It's not the torque converter, it's the torque converter solenoid.

Thanks I'll look into it

So you have a dead cat and something's wrong with the tranny...

It's probably last until SMOG (if applicable) or until the tranny fails completely.

How long do I have with this thing?

If you live in a place where there's no smog, and can resolve the tranny issue with a solenoid replacement - maybe a lot

Thanks. I live in Florida. Thought I'd ask because Scotty advised not to change the atf on a car that never had it changed with high milage like mine at 300k. Instead, to drain a qt and add a no slip liquid.

Don't add additives unless it is slipping! That's just ruining the transmission.

Thanks for the tip
