Do 2019 Honda HR-V engines have oil dilution problems?

Hey Scotty! I recently changed the oil in my friend's 2019 Honda HRV with 118000Kms on it and noticed a strong gas smell. It has the 1.8L engine with no turbo, but it made me wonder, do these vehicles also have oil dilution problems like the 1.5L turbos? Thanks Scotty! 🙂

Your friend's one is having that issue.

do these vehicles also have oil dilution problems like the 1.5L turbos?

Generally, Honda engines, tend to experience oil dilution engines much more frequently than others.

For example here's a natural aspirated 2.0L also having the same issue (although usually they don't):

It has also been an issue on 2.0T (former forum member mod_man had an accord with that issue),

I've seen it happen with 2.4L naturally aspirated engines (you can look on the internet, for example),

While on the 1.5T it affected most cars (to different extends), on those it's much less frequent.

Something in the design of all these engine's ain't right...

Thanks for your response Dan. I'll be sure to check out the links you added. Cheers!

Yep, also remember to investigate the engine issue - perhaps it's caused by blow-by / compression / others. Similarly, remember to maintain that engine every 5k-7.5k km as gasoline is not the kind of 'lubricant' you want in your engine's oil...

Absolutely! Thanks again for the response and the advice!
Cheers!

it's a problem that is more prevalent on direct injection (DI) engines, especially turbo, due to the pressures involved. (2600psi !!)

Does your friend drive short trips?  If the engine doesn't get hot enough, often enough, then that will make dilutions worse.

Of course the problem is also a vicious circle.

diluted oil -> poor lubrication

poor lubrication -> more engine wear

more engine wear -> more blow-by

more blow-by -> more oil dilution

The only thing you can do make sure the engine gets good and hot, and to change the oil more often. Maybe switch to a 3k interval.

Thanks MountainManJoe! Yes, My friend takes short trips to get hot and cold drinks at McDonald's. LOL Sometimes, she drives to a city about an hour away, but not so much in the winter as it snows a lot here. I will certainly pass on the advice to heat up the engine before driving and get the oil changed more frequently than recommended by the dealer. Cheers!
