There's a lot of snow and ice in my area and a lot of cars get stuck and people skid and lose control of their cars. What i do to prevent this is when i drive my car i put it in the L gear to start with and once i get past the snowy and ice parts and im on to a good road(not that snowy or icy) i shift to D with my foot off the brake and gas pedal and at a low speed. I shift it back to L when im turning or when i get back in to snowy and icy areas doing the same thing my foot off the brake and gas pedal and in a low speed and shift it to L. I got told this might damage my transmission is that true? I drive a honda civic 2005.
No.
No. But be careful when when shifting to L. The sudden downshift can cause you to lose traction.
As I recall that was a problem in the original, 1949 version of the Packard Ultramatic transmission where 1st gear was considered to be for emergency use and selecting it regularly could damage the transmission.
Possibly that kind of thing is where what you were told came from. However the reality is it should not be a problem in your Honda.
Your car's computer won't let you do something that will damage or destroy either the transmission or engine. With a purely hydraulic, old school transmission like my 1979 Pontiac has, you can destroy it with a badly chosen shift. There's no computer in an old car to intervene.
