[Solved] E-85 vs Gasoline in a FFV

Hello!

I recently purchased a 5.7L 2013 Toyota Tundra SR5 CrewMax 4x4 (what a mouthful), and I learned when I was filling out the paperwork that it is a FFV, and after doing some research I learned that it can take E-85 if I so chose to put it in. My question is, is E-85 any better than regular gas? I’ve heard mixed answers for this question, such as 85 burns cleaner than regular gasoline, but drops your gas mileage. Is it worth running it?

If anyone is willing to throw their hat into the ring, it would be greatly appreciated!

It’s going to run the same basically. The vehicle adjusts the timing and fuel flow etc so that happens when it detects the different fuel.  It does burn a little cleaner, and cooler than gas, your mileage will be a little less per mile. I wouldn’t make a big deal gettin E85 all the time. Also if youndo go back and forth its a good idea to run your tank as low as possible from one before filling up with the other.

My issue with E85. All gas tanks in Virginia seem to take on water. Even new ones. When I worked at a gas station in my youth we had a long stick and this paste we would out on the end once a day to test the water content of our gas. Ethanol absorbs water and moisture where gas doesn’t. Here’s an article on some of the problems with E85, what it’s effects are on much smaller engines. If I had a dragster I would run it just because the benefits outweigh the issues but in a daily driver in the street. I wouldn’t ever do it.

Don’t get confused by the article I posted. It’s talking about lawn mower engines. But the issues can be the same for a car that’s not FFV. Parking a car longterm with E10 in the tank is bad enough. E85 longterm parking is just a bad idea.

Thanks so much! I’ll definitely look at that article. I use it as a daily driver, so ethanol doesn’t seem like the way to go. 😀
