Hey Scotty, my 1996 Celica the past few years has the code p0773 go on and off often. It is the e solenoid transmission code. Sadly, it went on right before smogging! I cleared the code but the smog place makes you turn on and off the car and when I restart it the engine check light returns! It is so stupid bec this car produces no smog but cannot pass w light on! Mechanics won't touch it bec they fear the tranny may die if they check the solenoid, drop the pan, change the fluid etc! The car rides awesome, any suggestions on how to keep the light off to pass it please, thanks!😁

And you need to accept the possibility that additional trans damage/maintenance may be required. I personally wouldn't hesitate to drop the pan, replace harness and solenoids. It will only get worse with doing nothing and the sooner addressed, the sooner you'll prevent (additional?) trans damage. You'll have to decide how much $ to throw at it.
