I'm thinking about buying a 1992 Volvo 240 sedan (automatic). I've heard that cars from 1992 and older should only use ethanol free gas. Is that true? I don't want to risk messing up this car if I buy it, but is ethanol free gas really necessary?

Where did you hear that? On the street? On Facetube? At a dinner party?
Is that true?
Not particularly. The main issue would be ethanol attacking rubber fuel system components, but on a car that old those should be replaced anyway and new parts will be ethanol-compatible. I currently use gas with 10% ethanol in cars going back to 1965 with no problem. Of course if you can get ethanol-free gas in your area that's going to be better, especially if the car is not going to be used much since gasoline contaminated with ethanol starts to degrade within a couple of months unless stabilizer is added.
