Evap Solenoid has charcoal in it

HI, 2016 Ford transit connect replaced my evap purge solinod twice in the past year now I'm getting error code P0456 which says it is a small evap leak. I checked my purge solenoid and found some small bits of charcoal in it. Does this mean my engine is burning the charcoal and doing dammage? Can this be the cause of the leak?

it's activated charcoal from the EVAP canister, meant to clean the fumes from the fuel tank. It won't harm your engine, but it will mess up your EVAP system, and it's probably getting into your vent and/or purge valves, which is probably why you keep getting EVAP leak faults.

You need to replace your EVAP canister.

When you fuel up, do you stop when the pump clicks, or do you keep trying to top it off right to the brim?

That makes sense!

I have in the past continued filling after the click. I was reading that is not a good thing to do. Could that have been the cause?

yup. The filler neck has a vent that's supposed to stay clear. When you top it off, you're flooding the canister.

Good to know. I've been doing that for years...!

I've had a couple issues occasionally which I'm not sure would be relater to the bad canister.

Occasionally my engine has fluttered and shut down with difficulty restarting. Additionally, while driving I've heard a loud whining sound which was coming from the gas filler neck it's a capless filler and the sound was air being sucked in which would mean the tank is under a large vacuum. Could this be related?

yes.

Any thoughts on buying OEM. The OEM version is around $200 while the autozone duralast is $80. Worth the savings?

the OEM one will probably last longer

The canister has charcoal already in it, it's completely separate from the main fuel system. When you're getting gas, the pressure already in the tank has to have somewhere to go, or it will trip the gas pump's venturi. Read up on how the evap system works, the gas infused vapor becomes clean air when you're pumping gas. It's activated charcoal.

Justin, thanks for the response. Hi think I worded my question incorrectly. I have a feeling there may be an issue with the charcoal canister as I am finding bits of charcoal in the evap solenoid when i tap on it which leads to the engine intake. would this be a sign that my charcoal canister needs replacing?
