Ford F150/Toyota Corolla Oil Change Type of Oil

Hi,

I know there are a million forums on oil changes but I wanted to ask the expert(s)....I have a 2020 F150 2.7 Liter v-6 Turbo, and I drive it about 2,000 miles per year. Scotty said on a video if you drive a car infrequently you might as well use conventional oil since you change it annually anyway. But is that true of an F150 2.7 Liter Turbo? I read that for that engine I should use Blended to possibly Full Synthetic, regardless of mileage. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

On a related note, I have a 2011 Toyota Corolla that has ONLY had synthetic oil, but same issue, I drive it infrequently, so can I change from Full Synthetic (all that has ever been in that engine) to Conventional oil (it has 90,000 miles)...or stick with it?

As always thanks team!
Nick

Due to the high operating temperature of turbochargers it is best to use synthetic oil with a turbo. That's the advice given to me by a lubrication engineer when I worked in the R&D center of major oil company many moons ago, (It makes sense since synthetic oil resists breakdown and coking at high temperatures better than conventional oil.)

I would also use full synthetic in the Corolla. Using a car infrequently actually qualifies as severe service and the synthetic oil will handle that better.

Synthetic oil is better overall and is not all that much more expensive unless you're going for exotic/boutique brands.

Thank you Mr. Tobias - that makes perfect sense. I didnt realize turbos ran at much higher temperatures. Thank you for sharing your insights!
