Hey Scotty!
I have a 1985 Ford F150 with a 5.0l, EFI with dual fuel tanks and an automatic transmission. Around 50,000 miles. The truck is running on only the front fuel tank. The previous ripped out the fuel lines from the rear tank and the tank selector ( which I believe was the mechanical "dual function reservoir". Im not 100% sure though) and and just ran the fuel lines from the front tank fuel pump to the inline fuel pump. The issue is after driving X amount of miles, anywhere from 10-100 miles) the truck dies. I have found when it dies, If i change the fuel relay it fires right up. After driving again it will die and ill pull out the new relay and put the old one back in and it will start right up. But if i just unplug the relay and plug it back in, nothing. Any Suggestions? My thought was maybe its trying to pull from the rear tank still? the tank selector on the dash isn't connected to anything at the moment.
Thanks for any direction! (been a fan and subscriber for years. I can't thank you enough for your endless supply of knowledge, opinions and content)
Well who knows what somebody's done to the wiring when they disconnected the one tank. Obviously something's going on with that wiring to make the really hot or the pump itself is just wearing out. It will overheat if the pump is going out. If you can't find any wiring problems were somethings corroded or is rubbing against something and has taken the insulation off, I'd say replace the fuel pump
