2016 Chevy Malibu. Since about January I have been getting periodic check engine lights the code is "P2097, Post catalytic converter fuel trim, bank 1 - too rich". Took it to a shop and they tell me they don't know why it's going off, and the car is running fine. After observing for a bit, I've noticed it only comes on when I fuel up at a specific popular gas station in town. After the tank is depleted and I fill up at another station, the light will turn off after driving a few miles. The car has no symptoms I notice, engine seems to run fine, no stalling, misfires, etc... The only thing I notice is it gets slightly less MPG than advertised. Obviously something is wrong with the gas at this station, but if every other car in town seems to be doing fine with this gas station, can something be wrong with my car too?
@eazy-e-40
no your car is fine, the gasoline stations specially when they are very old gas stations, they have leaks, the water gets inside and then it gets inside your gas tank, this will mess up your car. only go to new gasoline stations. i use exxon because from all other gasoline exxon last the longest to me, other people are telling me that shell has gone very low on quality, cars start to run like hell with shell. any gas is good as long it doesnt have water or too much ethanol. stay up to date and let other people know here of any issues you may encounter, help the community
Make sure your air filter(s) are good (quality too). Yea, there's a lot of "less than ideal" gas out there. And when a car is close to the edge, some stations will set off these codes. I'd want to know so if it were me, I'd hook up[ my ODB2 and record while driving some values from both stations. Specifically what your LTFT is at (long term fuel trim). This info can let you determine how much of a difference there is in the gas and if/how much your emissions components have deviated from nominal.
@hillbilly
My air filters are OEM and were recently changed. I think for now i'm just not going to use that station.
A good decision at this time and may last for years still. Be careful of additives... some are bad for some applications/vehicles. Naptha isn't and cheap ; )
Hard one .. scotty mention this problem in one of his video .. i have never had it ...
Maybe try adding in some cat cleaner to the fuel mixture...
@klob
i used cat cleaner for 30$, check engine light went off but still came back anyway, so i do not reccomend cataclean sorry. i used seafom and as much as it cleans it mainly takes away moisture from your car, dont use too much. youll be ok with 2 bottles, i used 8 bottles 🙂
