Scotty,
I'm potentially looking to buy a third vehicle just as a toy. I've been researching different performance model sedans like the bmw 335i and audi s4/s6 from about 2007-2012 or so.
I'm a bit wary of them because i'm a tacoma guy and have never had to do anything to my japanese cars but put a starter on one, so i guess i'm a bit spoiled on reliability.
Can these be good cars if they've had maintenance done for common issues and i don't drive it much? Or do you have any secondary car recommendations?
German cars aren't fun. Just look at them ..... boring as bat poo. {black}:gape:
For some unexplainable reason, I laughed out loud at this. Thanks Joe. {blackemo}:laughtertotears:
lmao 😂
Meanwhile in Germany 😎

BMW’s are amazing vehicles. They truly are the ultimate driving machine. The problem is, they cost an arm and a leg to maintain both in parts and labor.
I had a 2007 BMW X5. I took possession of it in 2016 with 165K miles.
These are the things I had to maintain.
- Valve Cover Gasket
- PCV Valve which requires replacing the whole valve cover because it is built in
- Misfires due to aging coils and spark plugs (Coils are expensive)
- Replace AC Compressor
- Replace Thermostat
- Parking brake jammed
if it’s for fun, I think you might be able to get some good life out of it.
They're great cars if you can manage to baby it maintenance wise. I always take my BMW canyon cruising on the weekends, and without a doubt it handles like a champ. I'm at 41k with my 2016 428i with full bolt on modifications and a tune. I've had no issues with it for the 41k I've owned it, and hopefully it stays like that. Maybe down the line there'll be issues but who knows? I always do check-ups on it to make sure everything is in good shape, and that's what you have to be willing to do with an over-engineered car like this. And if for some reason an issue comes up, I can take care of it myself before going to the stealership or another mechanic. So if you're mechanically-inclined, even better for you. They are not too complex to work on, maybe just a bit tighter to work on compared to your typical Toyota lol. As for the parts, they're not as expensive people think. FCP Euro has OEM quality parts for cheap compared to the stealership.
I would suggest staying away from the M series BMWs though...they are WAAAY too complex and delicate to even try working on. Those are cars that you ONLY lease lol. You can have just as much fun with a regular BMW with the right sport options equipped and perhaps a tune of your choice 😉 .
cringed and laughed at this one;)
