I’ve got a 2008 Toyota Corolla that’s got 92,000 miles. Bought it used in August of last year. When I start the car first thing in the morning, there is a grinding noise under the hood that last maybe 1 second and the stops. Once the engine is warm, if I start the car, there is no grinding noise. I thought it might be the starter as I read that this batch of Corollas has had a problem with the bendix not retracting quick enough. Nope, it’s still making the noise.
Any thoughts?
This is a known problem with this engine, very brief grinding on cold start at cold temperatures. Usually caused by wear in the VVTI system. Here's the Technical Service Bulletin and a ToyotaNation Forum link on it.

(This is info that I looked up for my 09 Matrix, with the same engine. I imagine it applies to an 08 Corolla)
