Hemi tick and changing the oil type

Hi Scott,

  1. First of all,  great videos.  Love the entertainment and information. What is your take on the hemi lifters  tick and people switching oil weight claiming they have fixed the problem. Is this credible, a good idea? Based on the info they say to change the oil religiously the issue is resolved.

Thanks,

If the cams and lifters are worn that won't fix anything. Now. If they just started it might quiet them down a little, but if they are seriously worn, the oil isn't going to change anything. It's a design flaw and of course a lighter oil will splash up higher and lubricated better which could prevent the problem if it doesn't exist, too bad already

Welcome new member.

I don't think that's credible advice.  Like @scottykilmer says, there might be marginal changes but it doesn't fix the inherent flaw in the engine.  Stick with the specified oil and change it religiously.

That said, in most cases, the upside justifies a proper fix.  I don't know what year, make, or model you have, but in general the hemi V8 is a solid motor.  As far as personal experience, my wife has a '13 Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 hemi, and the motor is a dream - smooth power and superb reliability.  It developed a tick a couple years back, and since we had it serviced and since then it has run like a sewing machine, over 170,000 mi and still healthy.  [The rest of the car, not so much; it has a lot of little electrical issues... it's a Chrysler product after all.]

Good ol' naturally aspirated V8's are going away, but consumers still want them.  If you get yours sorted and keep it maintained, in a few years it will be worth it's weight in gold (or at least iron).

If you remove a valve cover and have someone spin the engine over, watch the rocker arms to see if they all move the same.  If not, the roller, hydraulic lifters and probably your camshaft need replacing.
