Hi Scotty, I have a 2005 AWD Honda Element with a 5-speed manual transmission with 130,000 mIles on it. Last month, the car developed a terrible low-frequency rumbling sound from the transmission area and clutch vibration so I pulled the transmission from the car. I found out that the cause of the noise was due to excessive wear on the input shaft housing (or “snout”) owing to the previous owner that drove the car way too long with a broken release bearing. I installed a new Exidy clutch kit and the rumbling improved but was not eliminated. So there is a chronic issue with the snout being worn down. Is there an alternative to installing another transmission? Thanks.
If you can find a low-mileage junkyard transmission that might be an option. I'd expect a used manual transmission to be a lot less risky than an automatic unless it is a model prone to problems.
Not unless you can find a guy who knows how to rebuild standard transmissions on Honda's and I don't know any anymore they all retired
