[Solved] How to remove a super stuck oil filter?

I tried all the usual methods how to remove it. I hammered a screwdriver through it and it doesn't come off. The metal of the filter bends but the filter doesn't turn. What can I do?

Is it possible to hammer it out with a chisel?

that could work. cut off the sheetmetal can, and then just tap on the baseplate itself. You don't even need something sharp. You could use a blunt screwdriver on the ridges inside.

this clever guy made his own tool

we've had this question a bunch of times.

How to search the forum

How to prevent stuck oil filters:

  • don't over-tighten them. Don't use a tool to tighten them.
  • don't leave it on there too long
  • don't let quick lube or chain shop to touch your car
  • always put a film of oil on the gasket
  • Make sure the mounting surface is nothing but clean shiny metal

It wasn't me who did that job.

If you do an internet search you'll find methods for stuck oil filters like this one:

dude!

I've seen it already. Does it work?

Never tried it, I've never had a filter stuck that badly.

I got desperate on one a few years ago, and put duct tape on the bottom, then I was able to securely put a standard oil filter wrench on it, and it gave it tons of grip. That and a breaker bar did the job. Scotty even mentioned my method once.

Not sure if it is applicable in your situation, as the filter is already torn up pretty good.
