I used the wrong oil

Hi Scotty,

  I have a 2012 Jaguar XJ-L (I KNOW you don’t LIKE them, but I’ve had good luck. I’m on #7) I try & maintain it regularly. With the oil filter (cartridge) on top & a metal tube in the filler neck (Reaching to oil pan) it’s not hard work. I’ve done it several times with NO issues!

It’s a 5L V-8 N/A & JLR specifies 5W-20 & that’s what I’ve used. However, I ordered direct from K&N 2 gallons at a good price. (I had been using FRAM hi-mil full syn from AdvAto) & maybe because I changed my oil & hadn’t had enough coffee but I read my order CONFIRMATION & just didn’t look close enough at the gallon jugs.

I only did since the car’s list mileage since the oil change {A few points} and the temp sensor shows cold for the 1st time (I live in the Florida Keys it’s so NOT cold here that I can’t turn on my engine to check the oil [Via electronic gauge—NO dipstick] because then it’s too hot!)

So I watched some of your YouTube & others about carbon buildup thinking because I had over 150,000 miles that could be the issue; it is a direct injection engine. Of course most of them seem to tell of GDI as the end of the world and we should all prepare for the second coming. Except you! I watched today including years about whether or not (Carbon cleaning) is really needed. The other one talked about the right kind of oil for GTI. I am checking things like volatility, so I thought I should take a look at this oil that I got from K&N and see if there’s anything about the standard, because I assumed as full synthetic it was fine and see if there’s anything about the volatility or where to get more information about the oil. (Plus, I’m pretty sure I checked the specs before I sent the order in.) That’s when I pulled out the leftover partial gallon And was completely surprised I missed it!

They sent me 5W-30 instead of the 5W-20 I ordered and possibly because the pictures online were of the correct product and these gallons at first glance looked identical to me. But I didn’t look at them closely. (Like when buying in person) But I think this explains why I’m having issues.

So I apologize for that lengthy preface but here’s my question;

Do I need to change my oil again right away or do you think I should just wait? I have been doing it every 15K myself as jaguar recommends but I’ve been questioning whether or not I should do it every 7500 miles? I am a rideshare driver and I do put on several hundred miles a week but from what I’ve read since; it’s mostly highway miles, that doesn’t qualify as extreme conditions* where I should do it every 7500 miles keep in mind that using only for synthetic oil. *I don’t remember if it was you or someone else online but I once heard someone say that ‘Anything south of the Mason-Dixon line was extreme.’

So in your opinion, do I need to change out the 5W-30 right away or is it OK to let it ride for a little while? That’s the only factor I have where my mileage has gone from a low of 24 to a high of 28 mpg versus a low of 22 to a high of 26 mpg. (Still better than the factory 18 and 23.)

I’m not keen and wasting the oil change I just did but then again I don’t want to shorten the life of my engine since the new one is over $10,000!

Your advice (And opinion) would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I can't believe they have the gall to claim that you only need to do an oil change every 15,000 miles I would not recommend you ever letting it get past 10,000 under any circumstances and you should probably doing it a lot sooner than that

Check your owner's manual sometimes you can substitute 5W-30 for 5 w20 but I don't know about your particular vehicle
