I purchased a Brand New 2022 Avalon. When I got 5000 miles on it, I took it to the Toyota dealership for service - as they suggest. I didn't even look at the paperwork and assumed they did its first oil change. Now, at 10,000 miles, I get a call from the dealership that my Avalon is due for service. I call them and they tell me that my Avalon is due for its first oil change and second tire rotation. I said, no, I already had it in for its first oil change. She says, no, it wasn't due for oil and only had tires rotated. Isn't this opposite of what you and I would do!!! Why waste time and effort rotating tires when your alignment should be as close to perfect as it will ever be, and neglect to do an oil change on an engine that is breaking in. This is making me second guess my favorite car manufacturer - what are they thinking! I plan to do my own oil changes every 5000 miles from this day going forward. Big, Big Fan...

they tell me that my Avalon is due for its first oil change
maybe you should have just kept quiet, and let them change it again.
Again? It was never changed. Read, don't assume - Your own advice.
Don't nitpick. My point is, they wanted to change your oil, and you argued with them. Just let them change it.
If you read your service contract, I'm pretty sure it says oil changes every 10k are covered.
I didn't argue with them and where did you get that idea? I just question Toyota's service intervals - putting tire maintenance in front of engine oil maintenance.
I didn't even look at the paperwork and assumed they did its first oil change
you really should read it.
It’s true. The maintenance schedule for many if not most modern Toyota’s is 5K tire rotation and 10K oil changes.
Scotty, most mechanics, and DIY guys I know suggest 5K oil changes. And you’ll have to pay out of pocket for the oil changes in between your complimentary oil changes until 25K miles.
Scotty even recommends NOT rotating tires on many modern cars. Just a waste of time and money.
With that said, IMHO, it is a good idea to follow the maintenance schedule in your owners manual, or better during the warranty period.
I realize that the tire rotation is a money making machine because they get your vehicle in the shop and can tell you that it needs breaks, rotors, brake fluid flush and all this BS when it needs nothing. Thanks for your reply. I do my own maintenance and will do oil changes every 5000 miles it Toyota will not for free. I totally understand the value of tire rotation to get max wear out of your tire before changing them out but each vehicle is different and requires different intervals. Thanks again, Dale
Why waste time and effort rotating tires when your alignment should be as close to perfect
tire rotation means moving the front tires to the back to even out the wear.
Doing an alignment means tweaking the suspension and steering to set the wheel straight.
They are two completely different things.
what are they thinking
saving money of course.
just do your own oil changes in between the free ones they give you
I just question Toyota's service intervals
You're right to question it. Don't trust the dealership to look after your car, because they only look out for their bottom line.
Take a look at this video:
https://carkiller.com/scottykilmer/postid/287712/
that's a good youtube channel (Car Care Nut) to keep on hand for your Toyota maintenance. Lots of good tips and info for owners there.
This one is also good: https://www.youtube.com/@ToyotaMaintenance
And Scotty of course.
Look around the forum too. There are lots of good resources, starting with the FAQ.
I never trust anything a mechanic does for me, I Check afterward to make sure the work is done. Easy with an oil change, just look at the dip stick.
